Are dentures right for me?
Missing your teeth affects your health and how you perceive yourself. Thankfully, there are ways for your smile to be restored with dentures. Before you begin, you will want to know if dentures are right for you, what the options are and how long they’ll last.
What are dentures?
A denture is a removable replacement for missing teeth and surrounding tissues. Two types of dentures are available — complete and partial dentures. Complete dentures are used when all the teeth are missing, while partial dentures are used when some natural teeth remain.
All dentures are custom-made and designed to restore the full function of your teeth. They consist of a pink-colored resin compound that resembles your gums and acts as the base that tooth-colored porcelain teeth are affixed to, leaving you with a natural-looking smile.
Determining if dentures are right for me
Whether you’re missing one or more teeth, dentures offer a way to restore your smile. They will aid in preventing health issues such as gum disease or more serious problems like hypertension, heart disease and stroke.
What are your options for dentures?
No matter what your condition is, there is a form of prosthetic to accommodate it. Here are some of your options:
- Partial Dentures: A partial denture is a removable, yet natural-looking dental appliance that helps restore the form and function of your jaw by replacing one or several missing teeth. If you have only a small few of your teeth missing consecutively, the Keller dentist may suggest a partial denture to replace them.
- Full Dentures: Full dentures are replacement teeth that are fitted into an acrylic base that is crafted to look like your gums. An upper denture features a plate, which covers the roof of your mouth, while the lower denture is horseshoe-shaped and rests securely on the gum and bone tissues. To replace an entire arch of teeth, Dr Nason may recommend a full set of dentures that are held in place using dental adhesive.
- Implant-Supported Dentures: Implant supported dentures are one of the best options for replacing missing teeth. Implant supported dentures give patients many of the benefits associated with dental implants while incorporating the affordability of dentures.
How long will your dentures last?
The life of dentures varies depending on each situation, but it ultimately comes down to how well you take care for them. By practicing excellent oral hygiene and maintaining regular visits to your dentist for checkups can extend the life of your dentures.
