Preventative Care

Dental Exams and Cleanings

Preventative Care Preventative Care also known as regular dental exams and cleanings are a critical part of preventive health care. During the dental exam, dental X-rays are taken so that the dentist can get a clear picture of your oral health and the hygienist will clean your teeth and check for cavities and gum disease. Forgoing dental care and treatment can only worsen problems.

The dental X-ray allows the dentist to see detailed images of specific sections of your mouth to help diagnose problems not visible during the dental exam. X-rays aren't typically needed at every dental visit, and your dentist or hygienist will discuss with you the need for X-rays based on your oral health and risk of disease. Because of how beneficial dental X-rays are to your oral health, you can expect to have them done at most of your dental appointments.

Dental cleanings can actually prevent tooth decay, gingivitis and gum disease. Exams allow us to find and treat problems before they get worse. The exam includes evaluating your risk of developing other oral problems and checking your face, neck and mouth for abnormalities.

Dental cleanings and exams are crucial for keeping your mouth and teeth healthy. The American Dental Association recommends that individuals schedule regular dental exams and cleanings at intervals every six months. We aim to provide our patients with a comfortable and personable experience while in our office.

Who is a Candidate for Preventative Care

Every member of your family is a candidate for both an exam and cleaning. Regular dental exams help protect not just your oral health, but also your overall health.

All new patients undergo dental X-rays so that the dentist can get a clear picture of your oral health. This is especially important if you don't have recent dental X-rays from your previous dentist. Radiation exposure from dental x-rays is very low, especially from digital X-rays now used, but talk to the dentist if you're concerned.

Preventative care dental exam gives your dentist a chance to provide tips on caring for your teeth and to detect oral health problems early when they're most treatable. We will work to improve your smile and provide you with the preventative care that you need. If you have questions or concerns don't hesitate to ask our office.

What Happens During

If you're anxious about having a dental exam, share your concerns with the dentist or hygienist. They might be able to adjust your treatment to help you feel more comfortable during the procedure.

During a dental exam, the hygienist and doctor will:

  • Drape a lead vest over your body and take dental X-rays
  • Evaluate your overall health and oral hygiene
  • Evaluate your risk of tooth decay, root decay, and gum or bone disease
  • Evaluate your need for tooth restoration or replacement
  • Check your bite and jaw for problems
  • Remove stains or deposits on your teeth
  • Demonstrate proper cleaning techniques for your teeth or dentures
  • Assess your need for fluoride
  • Possibly take dental X-rays or, if necessary, do other diagnostic procedures
  • Perform an oral cancer screening

If the doctor finds anything needing to be treated she will tell you what it is, answer any questions you may have and then schedule you for any work that is needed as well as another biannual appointment in the next six months. If you would like to schedule an appointment for an exam and cleaning, call us today so that we can get you in as soon as possible.
